I have been making signs now for over 25 years. when I began, signs were lettered entirely by hand; an art that required years to master. Many sign painters ( perhaps most) were also very good artists. Now, with advances in technology the vast majority of signs are produced by a machine which simply cuts the letters from adhesive backed vinyl, which are then applied to a surface.Because of this most sign shops have switched to the vinyl signs over hand lettered (myself included). Also unfortunately, because it no longer requires the skills as it previously did , many are in the business now that have no sense of design or what it takes to create an attractive and effective sign, which usually shows in the end product. So please take this into consideration when choosing a sign shop to work with.
